Why half birthdays exist (blame the school calendar)
Roughly a quarter of all kids have birthdays that fall during summer vacation or over winter break — which means no cupcakes in class, no birthday crown, no "star of the day". The half birthday is the fix teachers invented: a July 15 kid celebrates January 15 in the classroom, and everyone gets a turn. Many elementary schools now schedule half-birthday celebrations officially, and plenty of families keep the tradition going with a half cake (literally half a cake, cut down the middle) even after the school years end.
How the math works — and the August 31 problem
A half birthday is your birth date plus exactly six calendar months, keeping the same day of the month. Born the 10th? Your half birthday is on a 10th, six months along. The only wrinkle is when the target month is too short: six months after August 29, 30, or 31 would be "February 29/30/31", so the date clamps to the last real day of February — the 28th, or the 29th in a leap year.
