Why business days and calendar days diverge fast
A month is roughly 30 calendar days but only about 21–23 working days — and one well-placed holiday week can knock that down further. The week of Thanksgiving 2025, for example, contains just four business days, and the stretch from Christmas 2026 through New Year 2027 loses two more. That is why "10 business days" and "two weeks" are not the same promise: 10 business days starting the Monday before Thanksgiving actually runs 15 calendar days. This calculator walks the real calendar, day by day, so quirks like observed holidays (July 4, 2026 lands on a Saturday, so Friday July 3 is the day off) are handled exactly the way banks, courts, and HR departments handle them.
Counting conventions: read the fine print
Two things change the answer, and both are toggles above. First, whether the start day counts: a shipping promise of "3 business days" placed on Monday morning usually means Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday. A legal "within 5 business days of receipt" sometimes starts the clock on the receipt day itself. Second, which holidays apply: federal offices and banks close for all eleven federal holidays, but many private employers skip Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and state courts add their own dates.
